A literary Prize was created in 2000 in honour of the great 18th century Flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté, for the best French gardening and botanical books of the year .

Organized by the Association des Jardins du Maine (JASPE) in partnership with the Institut Jardiland, the Pierre-Joseph Redouté Prize is awarded every year in the Loire Valley, the first week-end of June at the Chateau du Lude during the Garden festival.

The Pierre-Joseph Redouté Prize is awarded by an experienced and discerning Jury : Botanist Olivier Colin, journalist Martine Gérardin, interior Designer Jacques Garcia, Actress Marie-Anne Chazel, Jean Noel Burte, retired Director of The Luxembourg Gardens, amateur gardener Maryvonne Pinault, well known Belgian gardener Diane de Belder, Film Producer Jean-Louis Remilleux, and Landscape Gardener Louis Benech.

The Sarthe Conseil General, The Conseil Regional - the region of the Loire valley, Chérie FM, Le Maine Libre and Groupama, all gave their encouragement and support to the Pierre-Joseph Redouté Prize.

The winners and runner-ups were all present during the Garden festival at the château du Lude, for book signings, workshops and talks on some of the great figures and subjects in Gardening History. The awarded books are available all year round at the bookshops "La Maison Rustique" in Paris, and of course at all the Jardiland gardencenters.

To celebrate the 10th edition of the Prize and the 250 years of Pierre-Joseph Redouté's birth, a new rose 'Prix Pierre-Joseph Redouté' was created in 2009 by the rose specialist Guillot, whose origins go back to the time of the famous painter. It is a healthy shrub rose, with a scented flower, bright pink petals with apricot edging, flowering all summer. The rose is available at the nurseries Guillot
