A literary Prize was created in 2000 in honour of the great 18th century Flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté, for the best French gardening and botanical books of the year .

Organized by the Association des Jardins du Maine (JASPE )in partnership with the Institut Jardiland, the Pierre-Joseph Redouté Prize is awarded every year the first week-end in June at the Chateau du Lude during the Week-end des Jardiniers.

The Pierre-Joseph Redouté Prize is awarded by an experienced and discerning Jury, Olivier Colin, Botanist, Martine Gérardin, journalist, Jacques Garcia, interior Designer, Marie-Anne Chazel Actress, Jean Noel Burte, retired Director of The Luxembourg Gardens, Maryvonne Pinault, amateur gardener, Diane de Belder , well known Belgian gardener, Jean-Louis Remilleux, Film Producer and Louis Benech, Landscape Gardener.

The Conseil General of the Sarthe, The Conseil Regional - the region of the Loire, Chérie FM, Le Maine Libre, Groupama and Champagne Prieur, all gave their encouragement and support to the Pierre-Joseph Redouté Prize.

The winners and runners up were all present during the Garden week-end for book dedications, workshops and talks on some of the great figures and subjects in Gardening History. The books selected are available all year round at bookshop “La Maison Rustique” in Paris and the Bookshop Doucet in Le Mans.

The 10th anniversary of the Prize was celebrated the 6th and 7th June during a week- end of festivities, exhibits, specialist stands and the introduction of a new rose ‘Prix Pierre-Joseph Redouté’.
It is a strong and vigorous shrub rose, with a scented flower, bright pink petals with apricot edging, flowering all summer. Created by the rose specialist Guillot, whose origins go back to the time of Pierre-Joseph Redouté. The rose is available at the nurseries Guillot and at Chateau du Lude.

On the occasion of the 10th Anniverary the Jury gave a special award, Prix P.J. Redouté d’Honneur, to BELIN publishers, whose outstanding Botanical works have often been rewarded in the last 10 years.

On 15th September there will be book dedications by all prize winners and runners up at La Maison Rustique, 24, rue Jacob 75006 Paris at 6.30 PM preceded by an illustrated lecture by Cedric Pollet on his book Ecorces.
